How to Repair a Bent Bicycle Rim
A bent or wobbly rim can often be trued with spoke adjustment. Learn when a rim can be repaired vs when it must be replaced, and how to do lateral and radial truing.
A bent rim causes wobble, brake rub, or hop. Minor bends can often be fixed by adjusting spokes; severe damage may require a new rim or wheel.
The short answer: Lateral truing fixes side-to-side wobble by tightening spokes on one side and loosening on the other. Radial truing fixes up-and-down hop. Use a truing stand or the bike’s brakes as a reference. Replace the rim if it’s cracked, severely dented, or has a flat spot that won’t true. Minor wobble and hop are usually repairable.
Here’s how to assess and repair a bent rim.
When Can a Rim Be Repaired?
Repairable:
- Lateral wobble — Rim moves side to side. Spoke adjustment can correct it.
- Radial hop — Rim has high and low spots (up and down). Spoke adjustment can improve it.
- Minor dents — Small dings that don’t affect structural integrity.
Replace instead:
- Crack — Any crack in the rim is a safety risk.
- Severe dent or flat spot — Rim is deformed and won’t true.
- Bent brake track — Rim brake track is damaged and won’t hold a pad properly.
- Carbon rim damage — Carbon can fail suddenly; consult a professional.
Truing Terminology
- Lateral (wobble) — Side-to-side movement. The rim moves left and right when you spin the wheel.
- Radial (hop) — Up-and-down movement. The rim has high and low spots.
- Truing — Adjusting spoke tension to correct wobble and hop.
How to True a Wheel (Lateral)
What you need: Spoke wrench (correct size for your nipples), truing stand or bike with brakes as reference.
Steps:
- Mount the wheel — In a truing stand or in the bike frame. Use the brake pads as a reference if no stand.
- Spin the wheel — Find the spot where the rim is farthest from the brake pad (or truing stand gauge).
- Tighten spokes on the side that’s too far — If the rim is too far to the right, tighten the right-side spokes (and/or loosen the left) at that spot. Spokes pull the rim toward their side.
- Adjust in small increments — Quarter-turns. Recheck after each adjustment.
- Work around the wheel — Address each wobble. Avoid overtightening—spokes can break or the rim can be overstressed.
- Check tension — Spokes should feel similar in tension. A very loose or very tight spoke can indicate a problem.
Rule: Tightening a spoke pulls the rim toward that spoke’s flange. To move the rim right, tighten right-side spokes or loosen left-side spokes at that spot.
How to True a Wheel (Radial)
Radial truing addresses hop—high and low spots.
- Find the high spot — Spin the wheel. The spot closest to the brake or stand is the high spot.
- Tighten the spokes at that spot — Tighten spokes on both sides equally to pull the rim inward (reduce the high spot).
- Find the low spot — The spot farthest from the brake.
- Loosen the spokes at that spot — Loosen both sides equally to let the rim move outward.
- Adjust gradually — Small turns, recheck often.
Order: Many wheelbuilders true lateral first, then radial. Lateral has a bigger effect on brake rub and ride quality.
Truing Stand vs Bike Frame
Truing stand — Most accurate. Holds the wheel, has gauges for lateral and radial. Best for serious work.
Bike frame — Use the brake pads as a reference. Adequate for minor truing. Ensure the brake is centered and the wheel is properly seated.
Repair Bent Bicycle Rim FAQs
When can a bent rim be repaired vs replaced?
Minor lateral wobble and radial hop can usually be trued with spoke adjustment. Replace the rim if it's cracked, severely dented, has a flat spot that won't true, or if the brake track is damaged.
Do I true lateral or radial first?
Many wheelbuilders true lateral (side-to-side) first, then radial (hop). Lateral has a bigger impact on brake rub. Both can be done on the same wheel.
Can I true a wheel while it's on the bike?
Yes. Use the brake pads as a reference. Ensure the brake is centered and the wheel is properly seated. It's less precise than a truing stand but works for minor adjustments.
What's the difference between hop and wobble?
Wobble (lateral) is side-to-side movement. Hop (radial) is up-and-down—high and low spots in the rim. Both are fixed by adjusting spoke tension.
Summary
Truing fixes lateral wobble and radial hop by adjusting spoke tension. Tighten spokes on the side you want the rim to move toward; loosen on the opposite side. Replace the rim if it’s cracked, severely dented, or won’t true. Use a truing stand for best results, or the brake pads as a reference.
